Home Energy Management Systems for Northern California Residences
AUDIOVISIONS designs whole-home energy systems that monitor energy consumption, manage stored power, and maintain essential circuits during planned shutoffs and emergency power outages.
Grid Reliability Now Shapes How Homes Are Planned
Across Northern California, the electrical service is no longer a background utility. It has become a factor in how residences are designed, specified, and occupied.
Public safety power shutoffs have made planned outages a recurring condition rather than an exception. This is particularly the case in the North Bay, the Sierra foothills, and the wildland-urban-interface communities surrounding them.
Utility rates also continue to rise. Revisions to net metering have made stored energy considerably more valuable when consumed on-site rather than exported to the grid. Electric vehicle charging, conditioned wine storage, well pumps, and dedicated home offices have each added meaningful power demand.
Handled in isolation, energy systems produce predictable difficulties: battery equipment arrives without a designated location, circuit priorities are determined during an outage instead of before one, and energy data remains in a separate application from every other system in the home. The equipment is rarely the problem. The coordination between systems is.
One Team Accountable for How It All Works Together
Most of these difficulties trace back to a single cause: the systems are purchased separately and never made to answer to one another. Solving that requires someone responsible for the whole system, not just one component of it.
AUDIOVISIONS has spent more than three decades engineering integrated systems for California residences, and we apply that same discipline to energy. In practice, that means:
- Equipment locations are drawn rather than discovered. Panel, inverter, battery, and generator placement is coordinated with ventilation, setbacks, and sightlines before anything is ordered.
- Circuit priorities are established before an outage, not during one. We work through which systems must remain energized during a shutoff and program that hierarchy in advance, so the response is automatic.
- Energy appears in the same interface as everything else. Monitoring and control operate alongside lighting, shading, climate, security, and entertainment rather than in an isolated application.
- Rate structure informs how the system behaves. Stored energy is drawn during peak-rate periods and replenished when power is least expensive, aligning system behavior with current net metering rules.
- New loads are accounted for in the electrical plan. Vehicle charging, conditioned wine storage, and dedicated home offices are evaluated against available capacity from the outset.
The Components of an Integrated Energy System
Consumption is measured at the circuit and individual load levels, with historical data available for selected time periods to identify which systems account for the largest share of usage.
Demand is balanced across major loads, including vehicle charging, well pumps, and climate equipment, so available capacity is allocated by design rather than by circumstance.
Daytime solar production is stored and consumed during evening peak-rate periods, when grid energy carries its highest cost.
Priority circuits are established in advance. Refrigeration, networking, security, well and septic equipment, medical devices, and selected lighting remain powered while non-essential loads are suspended.
Solar, battery storage, standby generation, and vehicle charging operate as a single coordinated system.
Automated shading and climate control directly reduce heating and cooling demand, lowering the load before stored capacity is drawn upon.
Engineering Energy Systems Around the Architecture
AUDIOVISIONS brings more than 30 years of experience integrating technology into refined California homes. We are one of the largest luxury technology integration firms in the state, with four offices statewide. This includes our Northern California team serving the North Bay, San Francisco, and Silicon Valley. As an authorized Savant Power dealer, we design, document, program, and support energy systems as part of a complete home infrastructure.
Northern California projects rarely resemble one another. A glass pavilion on the Peninsula presents different requirements than a historic San Francisco residence or a timber-and-stone property near Lake Tahoe. Equipment locations, battery placement, and circuit priorities are resolved during design, when they can still be coordinated against sightlines, ventilation requirements, and architectural detailing.
The engineers who specify a system also program it and remain available afterward. Proactive monitoring and structured support plans allow performance to continue as the residence changes.

Following commissioning, energy scenes are configured, and the homeowner is introduced to the system. Proactive monitoring and white-glove support provide a clear path for assistance, maintenance, and future updates.
Serving Northern California
Northern California is not a single market. A historic home in San Francisco and a property held seasonally near Lake Tahoe each present distinct requirements for power, infrastructure, and system design. Our regional team works across these communities and understands what sets them apart.

Frequently Asked Questions
When storage and circuit priorities are configured in advance, the transition occurs automatically and requires no homeowner intervention. Essential circuits remain energized while non-essential loads are suspended, and the system can shift to a reduced-load mode as reserves decline. Because shutoffs are frequently announced in advance, a properly configured system can also charge to full capacity ahead of the event.
Runtime depends less on battery capacity than on the loads the battery supports. A system supplying an entire residence at normal demand depletes reserves quickly. A system supplying predefined essential circuits, such as refrigeration, networking, security, well equipment, and selected lighting, operates considerably longer. When storage is paired with solar production, the battery recharges each day, which significantly changes the calculation for multi-day events.
In most cases, yes. Savant Power is designed to operate alongside a range of existing inverters, battery systems, and standby generators, adding the monitoring and control layer that standard installations typically lack. Existing equipment is evaluated during the consultation, and we advise directly on what integrates cleanly and what does not.
Yes, and it is among the more valuable applications. Remote monitoring allows an unoccupied residence to be monitored from any location, with notifications for outages and low-battery levels. Priority circuits can be configured to maintain freeze protection, water systems, and security during winter absences. In areas subject to smoke events, energy management can be coordinated with climate and air-quality systems on a single platform.
No. Energy monitoring and control operate within the same interface that manages lighting, climate, shading, security, and entertainment. This distinguishes an integrated system from a standalone solar installation, in which energy data typically remains isolated within a dedicated application.
Schematic design is the appropriate stage, consistent with structural and MEP coordination. Early involvement allows panel, generator, and battery locations to be drawn rather than improvised, circuit priorities to be established before rough-in, and the Title 24 strategy to be coordinated with the energy consultant in advance of plan check. Later involvement remains feasible but often increases costs and compromises architectural detailing.
